Government & Public Safety

The Florida Keys are located in Monroe County, with only five incorporated among them. Key West, Key Colony Beach, Layton, Islamorada and Marathon are all incorporated cities and as such, are autonomously governed. Ocean Reef, Key Largo, Tavernier and Big Pine Key/Lower Keys are all unincorporated Monroe County towns. For residents, this means a unique twist regarding how Key Largo is governed. Key Largo’s legislative body is The Monroe County Commission, which oversees normal city services and amenities. County services are overseen by an assortment of other state agencies: the Monroe County School Board, the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, Monroe County Sheriff, Monroe County Tax Collector, Monroe County Elections Supervisor, Monroe County Property Appraiser and a local sub-station of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District. These agencies are non-county agencies and are not governed by the Monroe County Commission. The contacts listed below are a mixture of these agencies, as well as consumer-related agency contact information in order to help your relocation go smoothly.
